Parental mental health is not often widely discussed – but it should be. Taking care of yourself emotionally is vital to your ability to be the best parent possible for your children.
As a new parent, if you’re experiencing feelings of pure joy and complete exhaustion all rolled into one, you’re not alone – welcome to parenthood! Just remember: your physical and mental health are important, too. Be sure to take time to take care of yourself so you can be the best parent to your child.
After having a baby, it’s common to experience a rollercoaster of emotions. And with all these ups and downs, you might find yourself wondering, “Is this normal? Will I always feel this way?”
The truth is, most women experience some degree of postpartum “baby blues,” which include mood swings and sleep problems. Oftentimes, taking a walk or talking to a friend helps relieve these feelings – along with time. Postpartum depression and/or anxiety happen when those blues or symptoms are more intense and longer lasting. If you are or think you are experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety, don’t try to tackle it alone. Reach out to your doctor for help. Support and options for treatment are available. Many moms also find comfort in joining support groups with other parents facing similar situations. Remember: you’re not alone. Approximately 15% of new mothers meet the criteria for postpartum depression.
