Toddlers often let you know what they think – and what they want! Here you’ll find out what language development looks like for a toddler between one and two years old.

Toddlers’ language skills are fast growing and filled with emotion. Here’s what you can expect at this age:

  • Responding to simple, one-step requests like, “Give to mama”

  • Doing basic gestures (shaking head “no” or waving “hello”)

  • Trying to say words they hear around them

  • Saying “mama” and “dada” or other commonly used names/terms

  • Pointing to a few body parts when asked

  • Responding to simple questions, like “Who’s that?” or “Where’s your shoe?”

  • Listening to simple stories, songs, and rhymes

  • Pointing to and starting to name pictures in a book

  • Using p, b, m, h, and w sounds in words

  • Asking simple questions, like “What's that?” or“Where is it?”

  • Starting to put two words together, like "more water.”
